SMEs secure multimillion-pound contracts to support Belfast shipyard modernisation
Companies across Northern Ireland have been awarded contracts worth tens of millions of pounds to provide services to Harland & Wolff in Belfast as the shipyard prepares for the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) programme for the British Royal Navy.
Cleary Contracting, an Antrim-based family construction firm, received a £10m contract to carry out complex construction work, including floor modifications to accommodate new assembly lines. The firm is also responsible for ordnance surveys to locate unexploded World War Two munitions on the site, reflecting the high level of technical expertise required.
Other SMEs supporting the programme include Barrett Steel Ireland in Newry, supplying steel sections; Briggs Equipment Ireland in Lisburn, providing material handling and commercial vehicle support; and McKinstry, which manages waste services. Wilson Utilities & Plant Hire in Lisburn is delivering infrastructure works, including dock drainage and storage areas for steel plates.
Central to the modernisation project is a 5,000 sq ft fabrication hall extension alongside upgrades to existing halls to prepare for specialist welding and lifting equipment. The contracts collectively employ significant numbers of local staff, with Cleary alone providing 50 on-site workers, representing nearly 20% of the company’s annual turnover.
Following Navantia UK’s acquisition of Harland & Wolff, the company has adopted a local-first procurement approach, ensuring contracts are awarded to SMEs wherever possible. Navantia UK chief executive Donato Martínez emphasised the importance of collaboration with local suppliers to accelerate delivery and reinforce operational efficiency.
The modernisation and SME engagement form part of a £90m investment in the Belfast shipyard, contributing to a broader £115m programme across UK yards, including Methil, Arnish, and Appledore.
